March 6, 2007, 5:04 pm Learning the joy of baking is a natural when you have a patient Nana to guide you. You can believe that the enjoyment of this cherry pie was even sweeter because of the participation in making it.
I think there is a lesson here for the church. Leaders want everyone in the church to participate in volunteering at some task. But is there an opportunity to learn how to serve in a particular area under the practical guidance of an experienced volunteer? Book learning (Bible knowledge) is not sufficient. Jesus taught his disciples how to serve by instruction, demonstration, and then guided assignments. History indicates it was incredibly effective.
March 5, 2007, 8:53 pm El Corte Madera is on Skyline a bit north of Woodside. I had some confusion about which trailhead to use, so I got a little bit later start than I should have. Since Skyline is along the ridgeline, the hike was downhill until the turnaround point and then a long climb back. The weather was great–for a change only shirtsleeves were needed. This was mostly second growth redwood, although there was one beautiful old growth tree (how did the loggers miss it?). I found 13 caches (and could have gotten more if I’d started earlier).
There’s a puzzling discrepancy with my GPS data. When I finished, my odometer read 7.73 miles. But when I look at the track log, and run an elevation profile on it, I get 11 miles.

February 27, 2007, 8:37 pm After leaving Asilomar after lunch, I drove along the coast into Monterey and picked up 4 caches. Two of them, at least, I had looked for a year ago. One was clearly missing back then, and one I just didn’t find, but got them both both today.
