Cabot and Carl Lakes in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness

Yesterday we met a young lady on the Tam McArthur Rim who suggested a hike to Carl Lake near Mt. Jefferson. She said it was a lovely hike. So, we stopped by the Forest Service office and picked up a map of the area.

Carl Lake

Since we had to pass through Sisters on our way to the trailhead, of course we stopped for coffee at the Sisters Coffee Company. The trailhead is some 10 miles north from Highway 20 and is in a burn area from a large fire in 2003 (I think). The brush is thick, and the pine seedlings are 2′ to 3′ high. The first mile and a quarter or so of the hike is in the burn, and the vigorous brush almost obscures the trail. After 2 miles, the trail passes by Cabot Lake, a small lake surrounded by forested slopes.

Switchbacking up hill, the trail continues for another 2+ miles until reaching Carl Lake. The Cascade crest and the Pacific Crest Trail are a mile or so away to the west (but a good, steep climb).

Carl Lake is pretty, but the trail to get there isn’t our favorite kind of trail. We much prefer a more open trail showing grand vistas instead of thick forest.

Tam McArthur Rim hike, Sisters, OR

We don’t get tired of the central Oregon outdoors, so despite having been here just a few weeks ago, we returned, this time planning to do some hiking in areas that were still snow bound in June. The one downer is that we hit a bit of a heat wave, with temps in the mid-90s.

We stayed at our favorite motel (more or less) in north Bend. We have actually become friends with the couple who staff the front desk. This morning we made our regular stop at Sister’s Coffee Company before heading out Road 16 (Three Creeks Road) to Three Creeks Lake.

The Three Sisters from Tam McArthur Rim

We have hiked around the lakes several times, but only once before have we gone up on the rim. This time we determined to hike farther towards Broken Top. I was hoping to get to the rim of the crater.

I discovered I had left my camera in the motel room, so I had to make do with a small Canon point and shoot. Even so, the haze discouraged me from taking too many shots. However, despite the smoke and haze, we could see the crest of the Cascades all the way north to Mt. Hood.

After hiking past the Tam McArthur Rim, we continued west along a ridge top toward Broken Top. When we hit 4.5 miles, Karen felt she’d reached her turn-around point, and we could see the trail stretch out before us, so we retraced our steps, but perhaps another time we can get closer up to Broken Top.

The twins at 3 months

Carolyn and Elizabeth (the twins) are 3 months old. We stopped by for a short visit and helped give them their bottles. Sometimes after their feeding they stay awake and active for a while, but not this time. But bath time got them aroused enough for some photos.
