How important is worship music?

It’s no secret that worship music is a “hot button.” Often divisive, I wonder what percentage of those attending a church service are actually drawn into worship of God by the music. In our church, I’m sure people have left the church because of dissatisfaction with the music (regardless of what style or songs we use, someone will always want it different). Steve Sjogren notes that a lot of guys “can’t stand the incessant songs.”

It’s also no secret that the 20 something generation isn’t participating in our church(s). Kevin Wax has a great post on Newsflash! The Key to the 20 Somethings is Not Musical Style.

Music does not bring people to church. People bring people to church.

The idea that a ‘contemporary’ music service is going to reach my generation just makes me laugh. No one in my class is there for the music. They are all there for the relationships and the Bible teaching. Not that the music is unimportant… it’s just not central.

Perhaps we should just dump the music and practice Hebrews 10, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another.”

What do you think?

I think the real question is what distracts you from meeting with God.

I know for me personally, it can be the worship music, it can be the announcements, it can even be the person giving the message.

How should we respond to that feeling of being distracted? How can we meet with God even when conditions aren’t ideal, because that is how it is on a daily basis.

We are so easily distracted from worship.
