Amgen Tour of California stage 3 finish in Modesto

Stage 3 started in Auburn and finished with two circuits in downtown Modesto. I positioned myself on a short straight before the final turn to the finish line. Again, I ended up with far too many fuzzy photos.

Team Sky positioned Greg Henderson, another of their sprinters, for the stage win as well as taking the leader’s jersey from teammate Ben Swift.

Amgen Tour of California stage 2 finish in Sacramento

The Tour of California pro bicycle race was supposed to start yesterday in Lake Tahoe, but was canceled because of a snowstorm. Today’s stage was supposed to start at Squaw Valley, but the snow still on the ground made Donner Summit dangerous, so at the last minute (the logistics are mind-boggling) the start was moved to Nevada City and a shortened race was done with the normal finish in Sacramento. However, four circuits were made around the capitol instead of only two, so there were a few more photo opportunities.

Despite my couple of practice sessions taking photos of the local bike club, I screwed up and used a too-slow shutter speed. I got too many blurry photos, I think from camera shake while using the 200mm lens. I shot the photos on the back-side of the course on a short two-block section between a right-hand and a left-hand turn.

It was a mostly down-hill/flat stage setting up a sprint finish. The photos show the Sky team working hard to set up their sprinter (Ben Swift) for the win.

Birthday for the twins

In some small way I regretted that today was the birthday celebration for our two-year-old granddaughter twins. I had thoughts of going to Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe to watch the opening stage of the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race. It turned out, however, that Lake Tahoe was hit with a late season snow storm and the first stage of the race was canceled. It was more fun to watch and play with the twins anyway.

Oh, and we celebrated Janet’s birthday too.
