Logging the TVC: Byte Overflow challenge cache

GC321HZ is a challenge cache that requires the finding in a single day of enough caches so that the sum of the difficulty stars and the terrain stars exceeds 256. I was unsure if I could qualify, but I ran the numbers of my maximum find day—an outing with the SoCal 4×4 group in the Dale mining district near Twentynine Palms on Dec 27, 2008. Interestingly, my blog post indicates I found 72 caches, but my Geocaching.com statistics page says only 69. That’s not unusual, I think. I probably missed logging 3 of the finds, or I miscounted how many I really found. Anyway, the sum of the stars for all of the caches logged that day totals 300. So, today I found and logged the challenge cache. Here is my list of caches to qualify. By the way, I needed 56 caches to qualify for the challenge.

Dayhiking out of Saddlebag Lake

North Peak from the upper end of Cascade Lake

One of our favorite day hikes is out of Saddlebag Lake, just east of Tioga Pass. An easy trail leads into a basin filled with lakes surrounded by impressive peaks and ridges. The first part of the hike around the side of Saddlebag Lake is not that interesting, but there is a water taxi if you are so inclined. The water taxi left the dock at the same time as we started walking from the trailhead, made its round-trip, and was back at the far end of the lake at about the same time as we arrived. So, it wouldn’t have saved us any time, but would have shaved 2.5 miles off our round-trip.

There is a nice loop hike that passes by several of the lakes and then at Lake Helen turns back up hill over Lundy Pass to return to Saddlebag. We’ve done that hike before, but only went as far as Steelhead Lake today, before returning as we came.

At Steelhead Lake we hiked cross-country a bit to get to Cascade Lake sitting at the base of North Peak in a sculpted glacial bowl. Glacial polish is evident on many of the granite surfaces and many 1″ to 2″ rectangular feldspar crystals are embedded in the rocks.

Our hike was just 4.5 miles long—about right for a quick hike on our way home.

Day hike to Blue Lake from Lake Sabrina trailhead

We started the day feeling a little tired, so we decided we’d just check out a few trailheads we’ve never been to. We stopped at Convict Lake first, and we could have done quite a bit of hiking and geocaching around the lake, but it just didn’t seem that appealing. So we drove on to Bishop and up to Lake Sabrina.

Beautiful Blue Lake

From the trailhead parking area we couldn’t see Lake Sabrina so we decided to hike for a bit on the trail. In just a little while we began to feel refreshed, and the scenery was pretty, so we just kept hiking toward Blue Lake. In the 3 miles to Blue Lake, we climbed from 9,100 ft to 10,200 ft. Blue Lake is in a lovely setting. We definitely want to return, getting an earlier start and lingering a while at the lake.
