Before leaving the San Diego area we went out to Point Loma and hiked to the old lighthouse. It’s a beautiful area. We also searched for a couple of caches along the road next to the impressive Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. This was our southernmost traverse of the width of California, about half on I8 and half on backroads like 94. It was pretty barren country, although as we detoured north toward the Salton Sea we did find some weird stuff. It was windy so the flag wasn’t flying because of the wind loading on the pole. We continued out into the boonies to a place called Salvation Mountain. This wouldn’t be my choice for communicating an important message. I thought about going on another couple of miles to “Slab City,” but decided we had experienced enough weirdness. We also stopped at the marker for the start of the Pacific Crest Trail which is just a few feet from the border with Mexico. We apparently attracted the attention of three Border Patrol vehicles (that I could see). When we stopped to check out a memorial marker for a murdered border patrol agent, one of them came over and chatted with us for a while. We spent the night in Chula Vista. We drove east on I10 to Blythe and then south on 78 to I8 and then east to Yuma. We drove by Imperial Date Farms so we stopped to get a date shake. It wasn’t anything special. I wonder if the date shakes at China Ranch are better. It was not a very photogenic day. We did have a nice dinner on the patio at the River City Grill in Yuma. |
