Bike ride in Half Moon Bay

Bike ride along the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail

We took Cortnie, Audree, and Chase to Half Moon Bay for a bike ride along the coastal trail and then some beach time. It was a lot of fun. Chase, who is four, needs to graduate to a larger bike before we ride farther than about five miles—perhaps next year.

Champion Sparkplug Mine

High on the slopes of White Mountain is the old Champion Sparkplug Mine (also known as the Jeffery Mine). The mine produced high-grade andalusite that was used in production of pre-WWII Champion Sparkplugs. It’s tough to get there, with a challenging 4×4 road and equally challenging trails that haven’t been maintained since 1942. About 1,000 feet below the mine workings are several nicely preserved structures of the old Black Eagle Camp. Here is a description of the geology of the site. This photo is from a 2008 visit.

Mountain Lion install

OS X Mountain Lion lives on my desktop now. The install was straightforward, although with the OS and related app updates that were also released today, the download was over 7 Gb. The automatic reboot hung (seems like that’s happened on previous OS updates), but a power off/on cycle fixed it. I have a couple of apps that OS X quarantined as incompatible—they are not show-stoppers.There are noticeable differences from Lion, but so far they seem small.
