Photo: Champion Sparkplug MineHigh on the slopes of White Mountain is the old Champion Sparkplug Mine (also known as the Jeffery Mine). The mine produced high-grade andalusite that was used in production of pre-WWII Champion Sparkplugs. It’s tough to get there, with a challenging 4×4 road and equally challenging trails that haven’t been maintained since 1942. About 1,000 feet below the mine workings are several nicely preserved structures of the old Black Eagle Camp. Here is a description of the geology of the site. This photo is from a 2008 visit.
