Mines Road was rated as a category 4 climb (that’s the easiest of cycling’s rated climbs). I find it hard, but these guys handled it easily. By that I mean they were breathing hard, but going very fast compared my crawl up the hill.
Tour of California Stage 4 2010The Tour of California bike race came through Livermore today, with a sprint points location downtown. Rather than watch (and photograph) from there, I decided to head up Mines Road to a King of the Mountain location. I found a nice location not quite all of the way to the top of the climb where I had the roadside to myself on the inside of a sweeping turn. The highway patrol was telling us to stay behind the white fog line, which I was careful to do. However, one of the camera motorcycles, trying to stay out of the peloton, was on my side of the white line. I was busy looking through the camera viewfinder and was quite surprised when the motorcycle barely squeezed between me and the peloton.
