Blue Moon

Blue Moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own.

bluemoonTonight is as rare as a blue moon, since, well… tonight’s full moon is a blue moon. That is, if you accept the recent definition of a blue moon being the second full moon in a month. The last time that happened was June, 2007.

A blue moon was not always defined this way, but apparently caught on after an article in the March 1946 Sky and Telescope magazine mistakenly interpreted the definition this way. Wikipedia has the details.

Interesting questions are: using this definition, when was the last blue moon on December 31 and when will the next one fall on a December 31? Thanks to a Google search, the last blue moon on News Year’s eve was in 1990, and the next blue moon to fall on New Year’s eve will be 2028.
